Evolving tradition
Home Evolving tradition
Cornwall’s strong food reputation has deep roots. But it’s been our ability to evolve and continually grow that has seen tradition transform into an ecosystem with longevity and resilience. Cornish pasties – once the practical meal of the county’s miners – are now one of the UK’s favourite foods and a protected geographic indication (GI) product with strict rules that determine if a pastry has the right to carry the coveted name.
Over 120 million genuine Cornish pasties are made and shipped around the world every year, with Cornish farmers paid £15 million for their ingredients and Cornish crimping fingers kept busy.
Also a GI product, Cornish clotted cream was one of the first products to make it across the Tamar, originally delivered to London by rail before kickstarting the mail-order food trend. And new stockists and fans continue to beckon. Since soaring faster than the speed of sound at 60,000 feet on Concorde’s last flight, its graced the scones of VIPs and royalty worldwide and achieved protected designation of origin (PDO) status for its distinctive texture and taste thanks to the rich milk from Cornish herds.
