St Ewe Free Range Eggs, based at Grampound Road near Truro, is a familiar and trusted name known by shoppers not just in Cornwall but across the UK.

The family-run company has come a long way since packing its first egg in 1982, winning many accolades since, including the prestigious Poultry Farmer of the Year Award in 2022.

Along the way St Ewe has gained an enviable reputation as a thriving business which invests in innovation while placing family values at the core of its operations.

The company applied for one of the Great Cornish Food small grants  specifically to develop the skills of the growing team, which now numbers nearly 70.

The money is being used to invest in new computer equipment and the latest digital learning resources, offering a greater range of flexible training and building knowledge across the operation.

The St Ewe team is led by chief executive and founder Rebecca Tonks, an experienced farmer in her own right.

St. EweWithin the company and the industry she is admired as a strong leader with a firm belief that happy farmers mean happy hens – not least the 6,000 free range birds at the home farm.

Rebecca says: “This grant is transforming what we can offer employees for their training and development, ranging from health and safety to general wellbeing.

“It also enables us to share our detailed scientific data about egg quality more easily with the farmers we work with so they can adapt their processes, resulting in less waste, greater efficiency and improved profitability for them.”
