Fish

At the heart of a county surrounded on three sides by the sea, it’s only natural that the ocean’s harvest is  such a big feature of our store.

Our fishmongers love the fact that they, like the fishers who supply us, never know what the next catch will bring.

It also means they’re adept at putting their skills to whatever comes their way. They can fillet, portion and prepare to perfection pretty much any of the forty or so species that could be landed at Newlyn, the home of Cornwall’s main fish market, in a day.

We only sell fish and seafood that is landed at local ports or farmed or processed in Cornwall. Trout is in fact the only fish farmed in Cornwall. Therefore, other than trout, all our fresh fish is subject to the vagaries of the weather and sea conditions – as is the fishing – meaning it can be a tricky old business keeping our fish counter well stocked six days a week all year round.

Somehow we manage it and, even if it means having a limited choice on very rare occasions, we’d much rather keep our integrity intact than compromise on our sourcing standards. Our fishmongers all understand how to cook fish as well as how to prepare it, and are always happy to recommend alternatives if your favourite fish isn’t available.

The fishmonger is open every day except Monday as there are no fish markets over the weekend, and is also closed on the Tuesday after a Bank Holiday Monday.

Sustainable Fishing

We are totally committed to supporting a responsible and efficient fishery that balances demand with the conservation of fish stocks for future generations.

We’re in close touch with our suppliers almost daily and we work closely with the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide and the Cornish Fish Producers’ Organisation (CFPO) to stay abreast of developments in fishing and support this important industry in the correct way.

We’re always keen to promote the lesser known species that are plentiful in Cornish waters. This not only saves the environmental cost of exporting these landings to mainland Europe, it also keeps more of the value of the Cornish fishery in the local economy.
